Four years after the Cayman S and three years after the regular Cayman were introduced, Porsche's mid-engine sport coupe received a significant update. This facelifted 987.2 Cayman version offered a thoroughly enhanced package, reworked from the exterior to the interior, including the engine, gearbox, and suspension. It could easily be mistaken for a new model if not for the same Porsche internal coding system (987C) as the 2006 Cayman.
The engine displacement was increased from 2.7 to 2.9ltrs and received direct fuel injection, boosting power by 20hp without increasing fuel consumption. The automatic gearbox was completely replaced by the new 7-speed PDK (double-clutch) unit, while the 6-speed manual remained standard.
Exterior updates included new headlights with larger lenses for the main beams and stationary lamps, repositioned fog lights, a reshaped smaller front grille, all-red LED taillights, and a redesigned rear diffuser with a centrally located exhaust tip.
Inside, a new infotainment unit with a 5-inch screen and MP3-compatible CD player became standard. An optional Porsche Communication Management (PCM) system with a 6.5-inch touchscreen offered more features, including Bluetooth connectivity for mobile phones.
