When Porsche announced a small mid-engine coupe, excitement followed. In 2005, we finally saw the 987.1 Cayman S, debuting as a 2006 model. This fast, mid-engine coupe was based on the Boxster series and featured dramatic new styling, a powerful 295hp engine, and popular Porsche features.
Positioned between the 911 Carrera and Boxster S, the 987.1 Cayman S had a distinctive look with a new coupe silhouette, aerodynamic upper windshield sill, curvaceous rear fenders, integrated fog lamps, unique side air intakes, an automatic rear spoiler, and dual sport tailpipes. It offered a rear storage area twice the size of the Boxster's.
Powered by a 3.4ltr flat-six engine, it accelerated from 0 to 60 mph in 5.1 seconds with a top speed of 171 mph. The engine featured the VarioCam® Plus system for maximum torque. The Cayman S came with a six-speed manual transmission, enhanced for shorter and more precise shifts, and an optional five-speed Tiptronic® S automatic transmission.
Handling and safety were improved with 18-inch wheels, Porsche Stability Management (PSM), and an optional Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) system, allowing for both comfortable and high-performance driving. Unlike the Boxster's open-roadster design, the Cayman focused on a stiffer bodywork for an enhanced track experience.
