Diagram ref no 10, 11 & 12.

Each bearing shell is produced with smooth, low-friction bearing surfaces and consistent wall thickness to maintain correct rod-to-crankshaft clearances when installed in the rod big end. The standard size designation indicates these bearings retain factory bore dimensions, ideal for engines where no crankshaft undersize machining has been performed.

Big end bearing shells provide the low-friction interface between the connecting rod and crankshaft journal. They help to support dynamic engine loads and maintain a stable lubricating oil film that protects both the rod and crankshaft from metal-to‐metal contact. With proper oil flow and clearance, these bearings help ensure reliable rotation and reduce wear under normal and high-load conditions.

Installed in pairs inside each connecting rod’s big end bore, these bearing shells support the rotating crankshaft by maintaining correct clearance and offering a durable, smooth surface for the journal to ride on. Their design promotes even oil distribution and stable hydrodynamic lubrication - essential for wear resistance, smooth engine operation, and long service life.

Big end bearings are central to engine bottom-end integrity. They endure high loads, RPMs, and constant motion. Over time or due to lubrication issues, bearings can wear, lose material, or show surface degradation - leading to increased clearances, knocking noises, reduced oil pressure, and accelerated wear of the crankshaft journal. Replacing worn bearings with OE Match shells during a rebuild restores proper oil clearances and hydrodynamic lubrication, helping protect the crankshaft and rod journals from premature wear while supporting smooth, reliable engine operation.

When to replace:
•  Engine is undergoing rebuild or overhaul
•  Bearing wear, noise, or rod knock detected
•  After lubrication or oil starvation incident
•  During high-mile preventive maintenance
•  When crankshaft journals are within standard size (no undersize needed)

Important fitment information – please read before ordering:

Please be aware that some early 2.5L 986 Boxster models (*) were fitted with main bearing shells with the alignment/locating tab in the centre, as opposed to offset to the side, which is what this listing is for. Please check your existing bearing shells before ordering. If you have centre-aligned bearing shells, this product is not suitable and is no longer offered by Porsche as a replacement part.

In addition, some 2.5L models may be fitted with the earlier-style crankcase carrier, meaning the bearing shells required have the alignment tab on the right, not the left as is the case with this listing. Please ensure you check your existing shells before ordering. If the alignment tab on your existing shells is located on the right, please use part no. 99610113164 instead.

Additionally, for 2005 and 2006 2.7L 987 Boxster models (M9625 engine code) (*), the existing bearing shells are no longer offered by Porsche. These have the locating tab on the opposite side, meaning these bearings are incompatible. In order to fit these bearings, the crankcase carrier will need to be updated to the later style, part no. 99610100709.

About Engine Bearings / Shells

Engine Shell Bearings – Precision Big End, Con Rod & Thrust Bearings for Porsche Engines

Engine shell bearings are the unsung heroes of an engine's architecture — ensuring smooth, friction-free motion between the crankshaft, connecting rods, and engine block. They play a vital role in maintaining oil clearance, supporting rotation, and absorbing load during combustion.

At Design911, we supply a full range of precision-engineered shell bearings, including big end bearings, connecting rod (con rod) bearings, and thrust bearings, designed for both classic air-cooled and modern water-cooled Porsche engines. Manufactured to high-grade tolerances, our bearings provide exceptional load capacity, surface finish, and oil film stability — guaranteeing reliability even under extreme performance conditions.

Whether you’re carrying out a rebuild, refresh, or performance upgrade, our manufacturer-quality bearings deliver the balance, durability, and precision demanded by Porsche enthusiasts and engine builders worldwide.

What Do Engine Shell Bearings Do?

Shell bearings create a low-friction interface between rotating and stationary engine parts, allowing the crankshaft and connecting rods to spin freely under heavy load.

Core Functions:

  • Support crankshaft and con rod rotation with minimal friction.
  • Maintain correct oil clearance for consistent lubrication.
  • Absorb and distribute combustion forces evenly across the crank journals.
  • Reduce wear and vibration, enhancing engine longevity.

Without these bearings, metal-to-metal contact would occur, resulting in catastrophic engine failure.

Why Do Engine Bearings Fail?

Even high-performance bearings wear over time, particularly when exposed to heat, contamination, or oil pressure issues. Failure can lead to increased friction, engine noise, or complete bearing seizure.

Common Causes of Bearing Failure Include:

  • Oil starvation or low oil pressure, causing direct metal contact.
  • Contaminated or degraded engine oil, introducing abrasive particles.
  • Improper clearance or installation, leading to uneven wear.
  • Overheating from excessive load or detonation.
  • Bearing fatigue or material degradation after prolonged use.

Signs of bearing wear include knocking sounds, low oil pressure warnings, or visible scoring on bearing surfaces. Immediate replacement is critical to prevent damage to the crankshaft and engine block.

Why Replace with Precision-Grade Bearings?

Installing new, precision-matched bearings during an engine rebuild ensures proper oil clearance, smooth operation, and reliable power delivery.

Key Benefits:

  • Restores optimal oil pressure and lubrication performance.
  • Eliminates knocking and vibration caused by worn bearings.
  • Prevents crankshaft scoring and internal wear.
  • Crafted from tri-metal or bi-metal alloys for superior strength and durability.
  • Precision-machined tolerances ensure consistent performance and fitment.
  • Compatible with a wide range of Porsche engines, from air-cooled 911s to GT models.

Replacing worn shell bearings is a vital step in any Porsche engine rebuild, ensuring the longevity and smoothness that define the marque’s performance heritage.

Highlights:

  • Comprehensive range of big end, con rod, and thrust bearings.
  • Precision-engineered to motorsport standards for high-load durability.
  • Tri-metal and bi-metal alloy constructions for strength and thermal stability.
  • Ensures consistent oil clearance and pressure balance.
  • Ideal for rebuilds, restorations, and high-performance applications.
  • Perfect fitment for Porsche air-cooled and water-cooled engines.
