Performance Plenum

Fits:
Porsche 992.1 Carrera / S / GTS 3.0L
The new 992 Carrera engine is another modern marvel from Porsche. Although displacement remains unchanged at 3.0L, there are a plethora of upgrades that elevate this new 9A2 Evo engine head and shoulders above the previous 991.2 model engine. We were fortunate enough to have unlimited access to a 992 Carrera S during our extensive development and testing program. This unrestricted time frame proved to be invaluable, allowing IPD to scrutinize every engineering and design aspect in an effort to deliver the best performing Plenum possible.
Like all IPD Plenums, the 992 Plenum is a product of efficiency that produces substantial HP and TQ gains through a superior and patented "Y" design that manages and delivers optimized air flow for enhanced engine performance. The Plenum has been proven to delivered substantial net performance gains across both power bands and is guaranteed to elevate the driving experience of any Carrera.
Development started with a 1D simulation to optimize the treatment of pulse peaks in the intake tract using different pipe geometry and known engine parameters of the 992. We then graduated to optimizing 2D slices of the plenum in CFD, paying special attention to places where adverse pressure gradients that might cause separation. This allowed us to adjust curvatures on the plenum faces and build up our understanding of what was happening inside the pipe at full throttle.
After we were happy with the 2D slices we graduated to 3D adding in all the geometry to make this a plug and play bolt-on part with optimal performance characteristics. After hundreds of geometrical and CFD iterations, we were pleased with not-only the increase in mass flow compared to the stock intake, but also the uniformity of the charge pressure and velocity across the 2 branches.
The efficiencies of the Plenum dramatically reduce initial turbo lag down low helping access the power and torque sooner, but the bulk of the power and torque gains are realized from 4000 rpm to redline, where it is needed and enjoy most. The HP and TQ gains continuing to grow and out-perform the factory air distributor as you climb through the revs. Peak gains of 30+ wheel HP and 25+ wheel TQ are achieved at 6200 rpm.

About the Performace Plenum:
This plenum is designed with soft, sweeping lines with the radius's and angles revised and reworked many times over.
The connections are CNC-machined and the plenum comes with suiting silicone hoses for optimum fitment and durability. The improvement in airflow is verified using CFD (Computer Flow Dynamics) as well as in our Superflow SF1020 flow bench.
Taking away restrictions for the turbocharged air that reaches the inlet will provide better throttle response and performance gains all over the powerband
Key figures
• More air to your engine, less back pressure and better airflow! Airflow at 0,1 bar / 1,45 psi pressure drop: 846 CFM (808 CFM), 5% higher! See diagram!.
• Freeform designed, aluminium casting with CNC-machined connections.
• Y-design for optimum air distribution.
• Comes with all accessories needed for installation.
Background
Upon launching the 992 generation, Porsche had abandoned the naturally aspirated engine for the Carrera models. From now on, all 911´s are turbocharged! There are a few differences in between the Carrera and the Turbo models, the displacement being the most obvious, but they also share a lot of components – the plenum is one of these! Throughout the entire development of the 992 products, we had unlimited in-house access to a 992. This way of procedure is how we always do it. It allows us to test our theories, prototypes and 3D-prints without hurdles or delays. We´d like to think that this shows on the finished product – ultimately refined without compromise. We are confident with what we have to offer the market!
Development
With the starting point in a comprehensive 3D-scan of the engine bay to get the structural limitations, we set to work. With the experience we had from previous Porsche plenums, we soon realised the need for a y-joint rather than the t-shaped OE plenum. From an airflow perspective the y-shape is more efficient as it distributes the air more evenly and with less pressure drop. We chose, as usual, to manufacture the plenum from cast aluminium as it allows for shapes that CNC-machining cannot replicate, and to us function always conquers form. Maximum airflow supersedes the bling factor

Performance Plenums – Maximise Airflow, Power & Efficiency for Your Porsche
A performance plenum is a critical upgrade for Porsche enthusiasts looking to improve throttle response, airflow efficiency, and overall engine performance. Sitting between the throttle body and intake runners, the plenum distributes incoming air evenly across all cylinders — ensuring consistent combustion and optimised power delivery.
At Design911, we offer a premium range of performance-engineered plenums designed specifically for Porsche models. Constructed from lightweight aluminium, carbon fibre, or composite materials, these units feature advanced internal flow geometry to reduce turbulence and increase air velocity.
Whether you’re enhancing a classic 911 or tuning a modern Cayman, our high-quality plenums are developed to deliver proven performance gains, sharper throttle response, and a more linear torque curve — perfect for both road and track use.
What Do Performance Plenums Do?
The plenum serves as an air distribution chamber that balances airflow between the cylinders. Upgrading to a performance plenum improves air charge efficiency, resulting in smoother engine breathing and increased power output.
Core Functions:
- Distribute
intake air evenly to all engine cylinders.
- Optimise
airflow dynamics for faster throttle response.
- Increase
air velocity and reduce pressure loss.
- Improve torque and mid-range performance.
- Enhance engine efficiency and fuel-air mixture stability.
A well-designed plenum ensures that every cylinder receives the right amount of air at the right time — unlocking smoother acceleration and more consistent power.
Why Do Plenums Fail or Require Replacement?
Over time, standard plenums can suffer from material fatigue, cracks, or restricted internal passages, all of which impact performance and reliability.
Common Causes of Failure Include:
- Cracks
or leaks from heat cycling and vibration.
- Carbon
build-up restricting airflow.
- Worn
gaskets or seals causing pressure loss.
- Plastic
deformation under extreme boost or temperature.
- Reduced efficiency due to outdated or restrictive design.
Signs of a failing plenum include loss of throttle response, poor fuel economy, uneven idle, or reduced torque. Replacing it with a performance-engineered unit restores full airflow efficiency and reliability.
