Track Rods
A set of 2 front inner tie rod joint forks used in the Porsche 964 steering system. These components sit between the steering rack and the tie rods, transferring the driver’s input directly to the front wheels. By installing both units together, you restore uniform steering response and eliminate inconsistencies that often arise when only one side is replaced - we recommend these should be replaced in pairs.
Fits:
Porsche 964 C2 1989 - 1994
Porsche 964 TURBO

These forks are essential load-carrying components that:
• Translate steering rack motion into controlled tie rod movement.
• Stabilise the front steering linkage under both normal road use and high-load conditions.
• Maintain the intended Porsche handling characteristics by preventing looseness or wobble in the steering chain.
Replacing both ensures total symmetry and prevents uneven steering feel between left and right sides.
Replacing the inner tie rod joint forks is essential because worn or loose joints can create steering play, reduce handling precision and cause instability during driving. They can also lead to uneven tyre wear and unwanted noises from the front end. Installing a new set restores tight, predictable steering response and helps maintain the safety and performance expected from a Porsche 964.
When to replace (Signs of wear):
• Steering feels loose, vague or delayed
• Knocking or clicking noises from front suspension
• Uneven front tyre wear
• Instability under braking or cornering
• Part of a full suspension or steering overhaul / restoration

The steering rack controls the front wheels by means of two track rods, terminated by replaceable joints - the "Track Rod Ends", attached to the swivel hubs. These will eventually wear, leading to problems with steering and handling, as well as being a failure point on the UK MOT and presumably on the statutory inspections in other countries.

With wear, the inner joint can develop play, wear down bushings/joints, or even deform - resulting in loose steering feel, vague steering response, front-end instability and uneven tyre wear. A compromised joint reduces the precision and predictability of steering, which is especially problematic on performance-oriented cars like the 964. Replacing the joint fork restores tight steering linkage, improves handling precision, ensures stable geometry, and maintains safe, predictable steering behaviour. This is particularly important if other steering components (rack, tie rods, suspension) have been renewed or if the car is used spiritedly or on track.
When to replace:
Consider replacing if you observe any of the following:
• Excessive steering play or looseness - vague or delayed steering response.
• Clunking, knocking or clicking noises from the front end when turning or driving over bumps.
• Uneven or rapid tyre wear at the front wheels - indicating alignment or steering geometry issues.
• Front-end instability under load (cornering, braking) or poor steering feel.
• Steering linkage overhaul, suspension refresh or restoration work - replacing inner joints is often part of full steering maintenance.
• If current joint is corroded, damaged or visibly worn.

What This Product Does:
- The track-rod assembly transmits steering input from the steering rack/column to the wheels. The inner joint is a critical pivot point enabling the rod to align with changing suspension and steering geometry.
- This inner joint ensures that the steering rack’s motion is translated precisely to the front wheels, without unwanted play or slack in the linkage.
- Because the joint allows articulation yet must resist lateral movement and play, it contributes to steering precision, directness of input, and accurate response of the front wheels.
- A properly functioning inner joint means the front wheels respond accurately to the driver’s steering input and hold correct alignment/tie-rod geometry under load (braking, cornering).
Signs Of Wear Or Failure:
- Steering play or vague steering feel — the front end lacks sharpness, there may be a slight dead-zone or loose feeling at the steering wheel.
- Clunking, knocking or clicking noises from the front end when going over bumps or when turning the steering wheel, indicating excessive movement in the joint.
- Uneven or rapid tyre wear on the front wheels — because the tie-rod geometry is compromised, alignment may drift under load.
- Delayed or imprecise steering response — the car may feel less direct or “mushy” when steering.
- On inspection: visible play in the joint, torn rubber boots, corrosion or visible wear in the fork end.
Why Replacement / Upgrade Matters:
- A worn inner joint undermines the entire steering chain: even if other components (outer rod ends, rack) are new, a weak inner joint will allow slack, reduce precision and degrade response.
- On a Porsche 964, which is performance-oriented and often driven spiritedly, steering feel and precision are key. Replacing this joint ensures the driver retains direct feedback and control.
- Replacement improves safety and long-term reliability: worn joints can lead to much worse outcomes (mis-steering, alignment issues).
- It also maintains value: correctly replacing steering components is important for older collect- and performance cars — a well-maintained steering linkage is viewed positively.
- If the vehicle has been modified (wider tyres, lower suspension, track use), ensuring this inner joint is in good order is essential to getting maximum benefit from those upgrades.

Porsche Track Rods | Design911 Precision Steering & Suspension Components for Accuracy and Stability
Track rods (also known as tie rods) are crucial steering components that connect the steering rack to the wheel hubs, transferring steering input directly to the wheels. They play a key role in maintaining alignment, stability, and cornering precision. A well-functioning track rod ensures smooth steering response, balanced geometry, and predictable handling — essential for the sharp, communicative driving experience Porsche is known for.
At Design911, we stock a wide range of track rods and tie rod ends, engineered for strength, precision, and longevity. Manufactured from high-grade steel and corrosion-resistant materials, each component is designed to perform under high loads and extreme driving conditions. Whether for daily maintenance, restoration, or performance upgrades, our track rods deliver the precision and reliability demanded by Porsche drivers worldwide.
What Do Track Rods Do?
Track rods are vital to the steering system, converting motion from the steering rack into the turning movement of the wheels.
Core Functions:
• Transmit steering input from the rack to the wheel hub assembly.
• Maintain wheel alignment and geometry for stable handling.
• Allow controlled articulation and suspension movement.
• Support precise cornering and responsive steering feedback.
• Ensure predictable handling in performance and road driving.
Accurate, durable track rods are essential for both safety and performance, ensuring every steering input results in precise and confident road control.
Why Do Track Rods Fail or Degrade?
Track rods and tie rod ends are constantly exposed to road vibrations, suspension movement, and environmental factors, leading to wear over time.
Common Causes of Failure Include:
• Ball joint wear causing looseness or excessive play.
• Corrosion or damage from road debris and moisture.
• Rubber boot cracking, allowing dirt to contaminate joints.
• Impact damage from potholes, kerbs, or rough terrain.
• Age-related metal fatigue or seized threads.
Worn or damaged track rods can lead to poor steering response, uneven tyre wear, and alignment issues — making timely replacement critical for handling precision and safety.
Why Replace or Upgrade Your Porsche Track Rods?
Replacing or upgrading your track rods restores steering accuracy, alignment integrity, and suspension performance. High-quality replacements ensure tight, consistent control and better feedback through the steering wheel.
