Distributor
A design fault on engines up to August 1993 that you MUST fix if not already done so is to add ventilation to the distributor to prevent ozone perishing the distributor drive belt. If this breaks you will be running on one plug per cylinder and will end up with poor performance and possible damage.
The solutions is to also fit a Venting kit.

Product Description
This kit warns the Porsche 964/993 driver of a catastrophic distributor belt failure. The failure of the secondary distributor head drive belt will result in severe damage to the engine if the car is continued to be driven with a broken belt. The kit integrates with the existing engine cooling system fan belt warning system.
Once installed, if the distributor belt breaks, the fan belt warning light will illuminate on the car’s dashboard. A Visual inspection of the engine bay will reveal if the reason the dashboard light illuminated is a broken fan belt or broken distributor belt.
Kit Includes:
• Cover with integrated control electronics
• Set of connection cables
• Cable ties
• 2 x Neodymium magnets (5x4x2), pre-assembled in shrink tubing
• 1 tube of adhesive gel (20-30 seconds drying time for gluing the magnets)
• 1 retaining plate for sensor element (blue anodized aluminum plate)
• 1 sensor element assembly
• 1 alcohol cleaning pad (for cleaning the adhesive surfaces of the metal tabs in the distributor)

Over time, these covers can become brittle, crack, or warp due to heat cycles and age. When this happens, debris and moisture may enter the distributor, leading to misfires, poor running, difficulty starting, or even complete ignition failure. On classic Porsche 911, 964, and 993 models, this is a particularly common issue because of the age of the vehicles and the harsh environment inside the engine bay. Replacing the dust cover is a simple but important maintenance step to keep your ignition system protected and working reliably. If you are already changing your distributor cap and rotor arm, it’s strongly recommended to renew the dust cover at the same time to ensure long-term performance.

964 Ventilation Kit includes:
- Distributor ventilation connection (A)
- Rubber Grommet (B)
- White Grommet connector (C)
- Hose (D)
HOW TO FIT: Firstly prise of the oval plate arrowed on the distributor with a screwdriver. Then remove the large black air guide pipe as we need to drill a hole in it at the green dot. The pipe removes by loosening jubilee clips at top and bottom. You will also need to remove two sensor connectors on the pipe. I also removed the two sensors near the distributor so that I had easy access to the plate. Drill at 18mm hole in the pipe, 40mm to the right of the tail light ventilation nipple. Deburr the hole and remove all shavings. Install the rubber grommet (B) into the hole and install the white connector (C) into the grommet.Install the distributor connector (A) into the hole in the distributor where the plate was. Finally refit the air pipe and connect back up all the sensors. Install the hose (D) onto the new distributor and air pipe nipples and route

Distributors – Precision Ignition Performance for Classic and Modern Porsche Models
Ignition distributors are vital components in Porsche engines equipped with traditional ignition systems. They control the timing and distribution of electrical current from the ignition coil to each spark plug — ensuring the right spark at the right time for optimal combustion, performance, and efficiency.
At Design911, we supply a wide range of genuine and high-quality distributors for classic and modern Porsche models, including 911, 924, 928, 944, 968, and early Boxster variants. Each distributor is engineered for precise ignition timing, consistent spark delivery, and reliable operation, restoring your Porsche’s performance and drivability.
What Do Distributors Do?
The distributor plays a key role in the ignition process by:
- Delivering
electrical current from the ignition coil to the spark plugs in the
correct firing order.
- Controlling
spark timing based on engine speed and load.
- Ensuring
efficient combustion for smooth performance and reduced emissions.
- Maintaining optimal power delivery under all driving conditions.
In older Porsche models, the distributor also houses mechanical and vacuum advance mechanisms that fine-tune ignition timing — a crucial factor for performance and reliability.
Why Do Distributors Fail?
Over time, mechanical and electrical wear can cause
distributors to degrade or fail. Common issues include:
- Worn
bearings or shafts causing misalignment.
- Cracked
distributor caps allowing moisture or dirt intrusion.
- Faulty
rotor arms or carbon tracking leading to weak or inconsistent spark.
- Corrosion
inside the cap or on electrical contacts.
- Failed advance mechanisms causing timing inaccuracies.
Symptoms of distributor problems include misfiring, rough idling, engine hesitation, poor fuel economy, or difficulty starting the engine.
Why Replace a Faulty Distributor?
A worn or damaged distributor can cause poor performance and ignition failure. Replacing it ensures smooth engine operation, efficient fuel use, and reliable spark delivery.
Benefits of replacement include:
- Restored ignition timing accuracy.
- Improved fuel efficiency and throttle response.
- Elimination of misfires and hard starting.
- Manufacturer-quality construction and long-lasting reliability.
Our range includes complete distributor assemblies, caps, rotors, and rebuild kits, offering performance and reliability that meet or exceed Porsche’s engineering standards.
1. What does a distributor do in a Porsche engine?
A distributor controls when and how electrical current
from the ignition coil reaches each spark plug. It ensures the spark occurs at
the correct time in the combustion cycle, maximising power, efficiency, and
engine performance.
2. What are the symptoms of a bad distributor?
Common signs include rough idling, stalling, misfiring,
poor acceleration, or difficulty starting. Inconsistent spark
delivery or timing problems caused by worn or damaged distributor parts can
also trigger these symptoms.
3. Can I repair a Porsche distributor, or should I
replace it?
Some distributors can be repaired using replacement caps,
rotors, or advance mechanism parts, but if the shaft or housing is worn, a
complete replacement is recommended. A new manufacturer-quality distributor
ensures long-term reliability and precision ignition timing.
4. How often should the distributor cap and rotor be
replaced?
For older Porsche models with mechanical ignition, the cap
and rotor should typically be inspected every 10,000–15,000 miles and
replaced every 30,000–50,000 miles, depending on use and condition.
Regular maintenance helps prevent misfires and poor performance.
