Power steering conversion kit.

Fits:
Porsche 911 1967-73 LHD Cars
For cars WITHOUT heater or A/C unit in the smugglers box

Do you find the steering in your 911 too heavy whilst parking or taking hairpin turns? Have you fitted wider tires, a smaller diameter steering wheel or a more direct steering rack? This is the solution, a speed sensitive power steering unit that offers maximum assistance at low speeds and minimum at high speeds, therefore the steering "feel" remains.

Speed sensitive power steering is operated via a mechanical speed sensor fitted between the speedo cable and speedo-head that is supplied in the kit.

It is possible to switch off the system. It is also possible to fit an on/off switch in the ignition switched 15+ thin red cable which will you to switch the system on or off at any time when driving. This will not damage the power steering in any way.

You can connect the blue speed sensor wire to the speedometer, this will reduce the assistance when you drive faster.

If this has been connected and you find the steering too light, you can place a “torque limiter” between the torsion sensor and the ECU which will allow you to  adjust the power steering from 100% to nearly 0% to select exactly the amount of assistance you prefer.

Please note: Special Order Product allow 3 - 4 weeks for delivery

Power steering conversion torque limiter.

** Special Order Product allow 10 - 14 Days for delivery **

Fits:
Porsche 911 67-89 LHD without air conditioning

Have you fitted an EZ Power Power Steering conversion kit but find the steering a little light and would like a little less assistance?

You can connect the blue speed sensor wire to the speedometer as this will reduce the assistance when you drive faster.

If this has been connected and you find still find the steering too light, you can fit this "plug and play" torque limiter between the torsion sensor and the ECU which will allow you to  adjust the power steering from 100% to nearly 0% to select exactly the amount of assistance you prefer.

This can also be used to recalibrate the steering centre position.

The torque limiter works with the use of a potentiometer to weaken the torque signal from the sensor so can be adjusted to the preferred level of assistance.

About Power Steering Conversion

Electric Power Steering Conversion for Porsche - Modern Steering Assistance

An Electric Power Steering (EPS) Conversion upgrades traditional hydraulic or manual steering systems to modern electric assistance, delivering lighter, more consistent steering without sacrificing control or feedback. Designed especially for classic and performance Porsche models, EPS conversions improve drivability while reducing engine load and ongoing maintenance.

Available from Design911, electric power steering conversion kits provide a discreet, reversible solution for enhancing steering comfort, particularly at low speeds, while preserving the character of the original steering system.

What Does an Electric Power Steering Conversion Do?

An EPS conversion replaces hydraulic assistance with electronically controlled steering support.

Core Functions:

  • Reduce steering effort at low speeds and during manoeuvring.
  • Provide consistent assistance independent of engine speed.
  • Eliminate hydraulic pumps, hoses, and fluid.
  • Reduce parasitic engine load and maintenance requirements.
  • Improve drivability without altering steering geometry.

EPS systems are ideal for classic Porsche restorations, restomods, and daily-driven vehicles.

Why Do Electric Power Steering Systems Fail?

EPS systems are reliable but can fail due to electrical or mechanical factors.

Common Causes of Failure:

  • Electrical connection or wiring faults.
  • Control module or sensor malfunction.
  • Incorrect installation or calibration.
  • Excessive vibration or poor mounting.
  • Age-related component degradation.

Proper installation and system compatibility are critical to long-term reliability.

When Should an Electric Power Steering Conversion Be Replaced or Serviced?

Replacement or servicing may be required to maintain safe and predictable steering assistance.

Replacement or Service Is Recommended When:

  • Steering assistance becomes intermittent or inconsistent.
  • Warning lights or system faults are present.
  • Unusual noises or vibration are felt through the column.
  • Vehicle usage changes significantly (performance or track focus).
  • As part of a steering system overhaul or restoration project.

Regular inspection ensures continued performance and safety.

Key Benefits

  • Lighter, more comfortable low-speed steering
  • Reduced maintenance compared to hydraulic systems
  • Improved efficiency with no engine-driven pump
  • Ideal for classic Porsche upgrades and restorations
  • Maintains original steering feel and geometry
