De-Cambered Ball Joint For A-Arm - Old Type (FI16).
Upgrade your front suspension precision with this de-cambered ball joint, designed for early Porsche 911 and 914 models (1968-72) using the FI16 suspension system. This ball joint features an offset mounting position, delivering approx 3 mm additional negative camber per side, improving front end grip and cornering response.
Sold Each.
x2 Required Per Car.

Fits:
  • Porsche 911 1968-1973 2.2L / 2.4L / 2.7L RS LWB (F)
  • Porsche 914 (1970-1976)

Diagram Ref No 13, 15, 16, 17

What This Product Does:

  • By offsetting the ball joint mounting location, the bottom of the strut / control arm is moved slightly outward, thereby increasing the negative camber angle of the front wheels (camber meaning the top of the tire tilts inward). This helps maintain better contact patch under cornering or when the car is loaded laterally.
  • Improves front end grip and handling when cornering heavily by limiting camber loss under load.
  • Because it uses upgraded hardware, it ensures the A-arm to spindle connection remains precise, reducing deflection or unwanted movement compared to worn standard joints.

Symptoms & When You Might Need It:
  • If you’ve lowered the front of the car, added stiffer springs or anti-roll bars, you may find the standard camber spec is insufficient — tires may roll onto the outer edge when cornering. This de-cambered joint helps adjust for that.
  • Worn or loose ball joints can cause front end play, knocking noises when the steering is turned or when hitting bumps, and uneven tire wear (especially on the inner or outer shoulder). The upgrade version helps eliminate play and adjust geometry.
  • Loss of front negative camber under lateral load: you might notice less cornering grip, front tires scrub or overheat on the outer edge, or the car understeers more than normal.
  • Visible wear: when inspecting, you might find the original ball joint housing is worn, the stud loosened, rubber boots torn, or excessive play when lifting the wheel and wiggling the control arm.

Why This Upgrade Matters:
  • For enthusiasts, track-day users or cars modified with lowered suspension and stiffer springs, the factory ball joint may no longer allow optimal camber and geometry settings. This de-cambered version gives a relatively easy bolt-in method to move the geometry in the right direction without major suspension redesign.
  • It offers both improved handling (by more negative camber) and also improved front end stability and precision (by replacing worn or standard joints with a stronger, correctly designed part).
  • Considering the age of 911/914 front suspension components, renewing joints such as this one is a worthwhile investment in safety, longevity and driving feel.

Diagram Ref No 17, 19, 20, 21

What This Product Does:
  • Standard ball joints are neutral in camber contribution; a de-cambered joint adds a small built-in negative camber to the wheel. This helps counter camber loss under load, especially in spirited cornering or track use.
  • The decambered joint helps maintain better tire contact patch under body roll, giving more consistent grip during aggressive driving.
  • Because the offset is relatively small (e.g., 3 mm), it can be a subtle but useful tuning tool without major suspension modifications.

Typical Symptoms / Use-Case Indicators:
  • Camber losses under hard cornering (e.g. inside shoulder lifting)
  • You run aggressive alignment on track setups and want to preserve negative camber under load
  • You want a simple way to bias the geometry slightly without major suspension changes

Why Choose A De-Cambered Joint:
  • Improved Tire Contact Patch – Keeps the tire flatter to the road mid-corner.
  • Better Cornering Balance – Reduces understeer by optimizing front grip.
  • Maintains OEM Geometry – No structural modification needed.
  • Durable, Race-Proven Design – Forged construction handles high loads.
  • Enhanced Precision – Ideal for track-day cars, restorations, and spirited street driving.

Diagram Ref No 13, 15, 16, 17

What This Product Does:

  • As the suspension moves up and down over bumps, the ball joint allows controlled pivoting and articulation of that joint while maintaining alignment and keeping the wheel geometry stable.
  • It must hold under load, lateral forces, and steering inputs, ensuring the wheel moves in the intended path without play or deflection.

Symptoms Of Wear Or Failure:
  • Steering play / looseness — the steering may feel vague or “sloppy.”
  • Knocking or clunk noises — a distinct knock over bumps or during suspension travel.
  • Uneven or rapid tire wear — particularly on the front tires, due to misalignment or movement under load.
  • Vibration or shimmy — especially during cornering or when driving over uneven surfaces.
  • Borderline geometry shifts — alignment may change subtly when load is applied or when cornering.
  • Reduced road feel / control — the front end may feel less precise or less responsive.

Why Replacement Matters:
  • Restores Steering Precision & Control - Worn joints introduce slack and movement. Replacing them ensures crisp, direct response from your steering.
  • Maintains Alignment Under Load - A healthy ball joint holds the wheel geometry consistent even when cornering or under load.
  • Prevents Further Suspension Damage - Allowing play in a ball joint transfers forces to other components — control arms, bushings, knuckles, etc. Replacing it protects the rest of the suspension.
  • Eliminates Noise & Harshness - New joints operate cleanly with no unwanted knocking or vibration.
  • Safety & Reliability - Because the ball joint is a critical steering link, a failed joint can degrade or compromise safe vehicle control. Having robust, correctly functioning joints is essential.

Mounting Location & Function:
This ball joint connects the lower wishbone (control arm) to the steering knuckle at the front suspension of the car.
It allows controlled pivoting and movement as the wheel travels over bumps and during steering, while maintaining a stable, precise alignment under loads.

Manufactured in Europe to OE specifications, this kit restores safe and precise steering by linking the control arm to the steering knuckle, allowing controlled tire movement. Over time, ball joints wear out or become damaged, leading to steering play, uneven tire wear, or knocking noises. Replacing them with OE Match parts ensures durability, reliability, and proper suspension performance.
