For cars WITHOUT heater or A/C unit in the smugglers box
Do you find the steering in your 911 too heavy whilst parking or taking hairpin turns? Have you fitted wider tires, a smaller diameter steering wheel or a more direct steering rack? This is the solution, a speed sensitive power steering unit that offers maximum assistance at low speeds and minimum at high speeds, therefore the steering "feel" remains.
Speed sensitive power steering is operated via a mechanical speed sensor fitted between the speedo cable and speedo-head that is supplied in the kit.
It is possible to switch off the system. It is also possible to fit an on/off switch in the ignition switched 15+ thin red cable which will you to switch the system on or off at any time when driving. This will not damage the power steering in any way.
You can connect the blue speed sensor wire to the speedometer, this will reduce the assistance when you drive faster.
If this has been connected and you find the steering too light, you can place a “torque limiter” between the torsion sensor and the ECU which will allow you to adjust the power steering from 100% to nearly 0% to select exactly the amount of assistance you prefer.

Have you fitted an EZ Power Power Steering conversion kit but find the steering a little light and would like a little less assistance?
You can connect the blue speed sensor wire to the speedometer as this will reduce the assistance when you drive faster.
If this has been connected and you find still find the steering too light, you can fit this "plug and play" torque limiter between the torsion sensor and the ECU which will allow you to adjust the power steering from 100% to nearly 0% to select exactly the amount of assistance you prefer.
This can also be used to recalibrate the steering centre position.
The torque limiter works with the use of a potentiometer to weaken the torque signal from the sensor so can be adjusted to the preferred level of assistance.

If you have never changed your lower steering column bearing that's located in the smuggler's box, there's a good chance that the bearing inside the rubber housing is non-existent. This bearing helps to prevent slop in the steering linkage assembly, but over time, the needle bearing inside gets corroded and ultimately disintegrates. This is often mis-diagnosed as a bad tie rod end because effect on the steering response is very similar. Rennline has created a billet aluminum housing the includes a pressed in needle bearing and unlike the factory unit, this one includes two weather seals to protect the bearing.
Replace it once and don't worry about it again.

Porsche Steering Racks | Design911 Precision Steering Assemblies for Control & Performance
The steering rack is the heart of your Porsche’s steering system — translating driver input from the steering wheel into precise directional movement of the wheels. It’s a critical component that ensures responsive handling, stability, and control under all driving conditions. Whether your Porsche uses a hydraulic, manual, or electric power steering setup, maintaining a smooth and accurate rack assembly is essential for both performance and safety.
At Design911, we supply a complete range of steering racks, including hydraulic, electric, and manual systems for both classic and modern models. Each unit is built to high engineering standards, providing exceptional steering feel, precision, and reliability. Perfect for routine servicing, performance restoration, or full rebuilds, our racks ensure your Porsche handles exactly as it was designed to — sharp, smooth, and predictable.
What Do Steering Racks Do?
The steering rack converts the rotational motion of the steering wheel into linear movement, controlling the vehicle’s front wheels for directional accuracy.
Core Functions:
• Transfer steering input into smooth, precise wheel movement.
• Work in conjunction with the power steering system for ease of control.
• Maintain correct wheel alignment and tracking.
• Provide balanced feedback and road feel.
• Ensure stability and steering accuracy at all speeds.
A properly functioning steering rack delivers confidence-inspiring handling — from high-speed motorway cruising to tight cornering on track.
Why Do Steering Racks Fail or Degrade?
Steering racks experience constant pressure, movement, and exposure to heat and contaminants, leading to gradual wear over time.
Common Causes of Failure Include:
• Seal wear leading to hydraulic fluid leaks.
• Corrosion or pitting on internal rack surfaces.
• Play or looseness in steering due to worn bushings or joints.
• Power steering fluid contamination causing internal damage.
• Age-related degradation in gaskets or mounts.
When steering racks begin to fail, symptoms include excessive play, vibration, fluid leaks, uneven steering effort, or knocking noises — all signs that replacement or refurbishment is required.
Why Replace or Upgrade Your Porsche Steering Rack?
Replacing or upgrading your steering rack restores handling precision, stability, and steering feedback. Modern or performance-oriented replacements offer improved durability and response for both road and motorsport use.
Key Benefits:
• Restores sharp, responsive steering performance.
• Eliminates fluid leaks and unwanted play.
• Improves road feel and vehicle stability.
• Available in manual, hydraulic, and electric configurations.
• Fits Porsche 911, 944, 968, Boxster, Cayman, Panamera, and Cayenne models.
• Ideal for restoration, maintenance, or track preparation.
Design911’s Porsche steering racks are precision-engineered to deliver the performance, feedback, and control Porsche owners expect — ensuring reliability on every journey.
