What a Racing Oil Sump Does

The oil sump, also known as the oil pan, stores and supplies engine oil to the oil pump. Under normal road driving conditions, the factory sump performs adequately. However, during hard cornering, heavy braking or sustained high lateral G forces, oil can move away from the pickup point.

When this happens, the oil pump can draw air instead of oil (aeration), causing a sudden drop in oil pressure.
