Gearshift Rod End Joint.
This Gearshift Rod End Joint is an OE Match transmission linkage component used in the manual gearshift system on selected Porsche 928, 964, and 993 models. It connects part of the shift linkage and helps transfer gear lever movement accurately through to the gearbox.

Fits:
Porsche 928 1978 - 1995
Porsche 964 1989 - 1994
Porsche 993 1994 - 1998

Diagram ref no 16

The gearshift rod end joint links sections of the shift control assembly together, allowing the driver’s movement at the gear lever to be transmitted cleanly and consistently to the gearbox selector mechanism. When in good condition, it helps maintain crisp, positive shifting and reduces excess movement or vagueness in the gear lever. Over time, wear in this joint can introduce play into the linkage, which can make gear changes feel loose, less precise, or harder to engage.

Function
Provides a pivot point within the gearshift linkage system
Transfers gear lever movement directly to the gearbox selector
Allows smooth articulation of linkage components through various angles
Maintains accurate and controlled gear engagement
Reduces excess play for a tighter, more precise shifting feel
Supports overall reliability of the manual transmission linkage system

A worn gearshift rod end joint can affect the feel and accuracy of the entire shift linkage. Even a small amount of wear can lead to sloppier gear selection, increased play at the gear lever, and reduced confidence during shifting. Replacing a tired or damaged joint helps restore more precise linkage movement and can improve the overall quality of the driving experience, especially on older Porsche manual transmission cars where linkage wear builds up over time.

When to replace
Noticeable play or looseness in the gear lever
  Vague or imprecise gear selection
  Difficulty engaging certain gears
Excessive movement in the shift linkage during inspection
Linkage wear found during gearbox or shifter service
Cracked, worn, or deteriorated joint component
Restoring shift quality on an older Porsche
