En 1989, Porsche reintrodujo una de sus carrocerías más emblemáticas: el Speedster. Esta variante, con un diseño impecable, no se había ofrecido desde 1959, cuando los 356 salían de fábrica y el 911 aún estaba a cinco años de su lanzamiento. El primer 911 Speedster se presentó en el Salón del Automóvil de Fráncfort en septiembre de 1987, pero pasarían 16 meses antes de que comenzara la producción en enero de 1989. Para el Speedster, con la mecánica estándar, se utilizaron las carrocerías habituales del 911 Cabriolet, equipadas con un parabrisas recortado y de mayor inclinación con marco de aluminio y ventanas laterales especiales de una sola pieza sin marco.

Tanto la carrocería estrecha estándar como la carrocería Turbo, más ancha, estaban disponibles en la mayoría de los mercados, aunque curiosamente solo esta última se podía especificar en Norteamérica y Alemania. En el interior, los rieles de los asientos se redujeron 20 mm, ya que los asientos eran una combinación de respaldos Sport con secciones inferiores estándar. Se eliminaron los asientos traseros y el área vacía se alfombraba como en el Club Sport. Una caja de almacenamiento opcional (igual que la del CS) fue una mejora sensata. La calefacción manual y las ventanas correderas se incluían de serie. Solo se fabricaron 2065 Speedsters en total, todos en 1989.

HISTORIA DEL MODELO Y PRODUCCIÓN
El primer Porsche 356 salió de la línea de producción en Stuttgart en 1950. La producción duró hasta 1965 cuando cesó la fabricación, momento en el que se habían producido más de 76.000 ejemplares de varias designaciones de modelos.

Fue el primer vehículo de producción de Porsche, con una evolución que comenzó con el Pre-A, el 356A presentado en 1955, el 356B a fines de 1959 y la última serie 356C presentada para el año modelo 1964. En cada forma, se construyeron predominantemente como Coupé o Cabriolet. Aunque había varias variaciones disponibles como 'Notchback Coupés' o 'Speedster y Roadster Convertibles'. También estuvo disponible en cantidades limitadas la versión 'Carrera' de carreras de cuatro levas presentada en 1954.

El 356 fue creado por Ferdinand 'Ferry' Porsche (hijo de Ferdinand Porsche, fundador de la empresa). En 1972, durante una entrevista en la revista PCA, resume su pensamiento detrás del concepto de la siguiente manera: “Siempre había conducido autos muy rápidos. Tenía un Alfa Romeo, también un BMW, y otros... Al final de la guerra, tenía un Volkswagen Cabriolet con motor sobrealimentado, y esa era la idea básica. Vi que si tienes suficiente potencia en un coche pequeño, es más agradable de conducir que si tienes un coche grande que también tiene demasiada potencia. Y es más divertido. Sobre esta idea básica, comenzamos el primer prototipo de Porsche”.

Este enfoque liviano le ganó rápidamente al 356 su popularidad, y combinado con su relación peso-potencia, el diseño del motor trasero, el manejo ágil y la excelente calidad de construcción le dieron al 356 un atractivo adecuado para el conductor: una fórmula comprobada que también proporcionó una victoria en su clase en Le Mans de 1951. Las potencias oscilaban entre los 40 y los 70 CV en función de la cilindrada (1100 cc, 1300 cc o 1500 cc) hasta los 112 CV de las versiones Carrera.

Los 356 Pre-A o 'prototipo' construidos en Austria tenían carrocería de aluminio, pero cuando la fabricación se trasladó a Alemania, Porsche contrató a Reutter para fabricar las carrocerías en acero y, finalmente, compró la empresa en 1963. Reutter conservó el sector de fabricación de asientos de su negocio. pero luego cambiaron su nombre a Recaro, formando la compañía con la que estamos mucho más familiarizados hoy.

En octubre de 1964, el sucesor del 356, el icónico 911, hizo su debut, pero su perdurable popularidad aseguró que la producción continuara hasta bien entrado 1965.

This very original numbers matching early long hood 911 has been well serviced and cared for since new. Complete with a Certificate of Authenticity from Porsche.

It was built as a US Spec. model and optioned with stabilizer bars, a Blaupunkt Frankfurt radio, Tinted Glass windshield, side glass, rear window, and the Comfort Package, 15" alloy wheels, "S" bumper trim, "S" appearance trim, "S" gauges (voltage & oil pressure), a more strident "highway" horn, bright-metal rocker-panel trim, "Porsche" deck lid script, velour carpeting, a leather-covered steering wheel, bright interior dash trim w/ matching rocker kick plate, and Bosch fog lights.

Re-built to the original standard colour Light Ivory paint work (colour code 1110), with black interior and folding targa top. It received a complete top end rebuild at 95k. miles, including updated turbo tensioners, new valves, chains, rails & guides.

Replacement transmission seals, the engine rear main seal, clutch, and transmission syncro's. The car Just completed a glass out, trim off full repaint in its original Light Ivory color, and has been installed all the new seals and deco trim, rebuilding of the targa top, and polishing of a few trim pieces.

The interior has also been restored, which only required replacing the German velour carpets, a few re-tucks of the original interior panels, and rebuilding of the seat hinge plates with new hardware. All the 2.0 to 2.4 liter 911's are reliable performers, but the 1972 was the first year for the new 915 transmission, it also had the MFI from the E model, and was the only year with the oil fill door on the right rear fender..... quite endearing to most Porschephiles!

Porsche made its first and most significant upgrades to the 930 for 1978, enlarging the engine to 3.3 litres and adding an air-to-air intercooler. By cooling the pressurized air charge, the intercooler helped increase power output to 300 hp, the rear 'whale tail' spoiler was re-profiled and raised slightly to make room for the intercooler. Porsche also upgraded the brakes to units similar to those used on the 917 racecar.

The RS was built so that Porsche could enter racing formulae that demanded that a certain minimum number of production cars were made. This is an original steel wings body conversion, professionally done in the USA. The interior is a contrasting red and black finish.  

This 1979 Porsche 911SC was modified into a "Flachbau" ("slantnose") this type of modification was first offered by Porsche for their 930 Turbo under a special program since 1981. The front end was restyled after the racing 935s. According to some sources, Porsche built 948 units.

The history behind this type of conversion is made famous by Camillo & Domenico Scaduto of Carrozzeria Italia at their restoration shop in Escondido, California. Domenico Scaduto and his son Camillo Scaduto handcrafted the "Flachbau" as Porsche did with steel fenders before the advent of lesser quality fiberglassed modifications by other shops. Yet, over the years, they were able to build 87 units in Southern California before the style faded.

The 993 Turbo coupe was released in 1995. It featured a new turbocharged engine displacing 3.6 liters producing 408 PS (300 kW; 402 hp). Twin turbochargers and air-to-air intercoolers, electronic engine management, redesigned cylinder heads and other modified engine internals were used. The 993 Turbo was the first Porsche Turbo with all-wheel drive. The electronic engine management helped the Turbo to achieve fuel efficiency far superior to any of the previous production Turbos. In connection with two catalytic converters and an on-board-diagnostics-system including four oxygen-sensors, it also made the 993 Turbo the cleanest sports car at its time. The Turbo's bodywork differs from the Carrera body by widened rear wheel arches (approximately 6 cm), redesigned front and rear bumper moldings, and a fixed rear wing housing the intercoolers. New 18-inch (460 mm) alloy wheels with weight-reducing hollow spokes were standard.
